The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on leaders across the country to move beyond drafting policies and focus on their effective implementation to address Nigeria’s mounting challenges.
In a statement to mark Ash Wednesday, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, said the season of reflection should prompt both leaders and citizens to reassess their roles in shaping the nation’s future.
“As Christians in Nigeria and around the world observe Ash Wednesday today, this season invites us to pause, reflect, and think carefully about the direction of our country and the role each of us must play in shaping it,” the statement read.
Okoh noted that Nigeria is passing through a difficult period, with many households grappling with rising living costs, uncertain job opportunities and economic pressures. He added that insecurity in several parts of the country continues to test public confidence.
“These realities call for practical action, responsible leadership, and a shared commitment to finding lasting solutions,” he stated.
The association urged leaders at all levels of government to prioritise execution over policy formulation.
“Nigeria does not lack policies; the real challenge is ensuring they are carried out fairly, transparently, and in ways that bring real relief to citizens,” Okoh said.
He emphasised the need for inclusiveness in governance, stressing that leaders must be mindful of Nigeria’s diversity and ensure government programmes effectively reach households, youths and communities.
CAN also appealed to citizens to reject division, violence and the spread of misinformation, describing Nigeria’s diversity across faiths and ethnic groups as a major strength.
“Our diversity—across faiths, ethnicities, and cultures—remains one of Nigeria’s greatest strengths. Continued cooperation among religious communities, mutual respect, and responsible civic conduct are essential for maintaining peace and national stability,” the statement added.
Addressing young Nigerians, Okoh encouraged them to channel their creativity and energy into innovation, productive ventures and responsible civic engagement.
“As we mark this Ash Wednesday, may it renew our collective commitment to justice, compassion, and responsible citizenship. Nigeria’s progress will depend on what all of us, leaders and citizens alike, choose to build together,” he said.
