The Anambra State House of Assembly has indicated it may lift the suspension of the member representing Ayamelum State Constituency, Hon. Bernard Udemezue.
Udemezue was suspended in August 2025 following allegations that he made social media posts disclosing details about the internal workings of the House, including allowances and emoluments of members.
The lawmaker defended his actions, stating that he had pledged to operate an open-door policy and render accounts of his stewardship to constituents if elected, including making his remuneration public.
Although he was initially suspended for six months, efforts to resume duties after the expiration of that term were unsuccessful. He was subsequently handed an additional three-month suspension for allegedly failing to follow laid-down procedures, including tendering an apology to the House.
During plenary on Wednesday, Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, directed the House Committee on Rules, Ethics and Privileges to review the suspension.
The Speaker tasked the committee, chaired by the Majority Leader, Hon. Ikenna Ofodeme, to urgently re-examine the matter in line with the House resolution and report back at the next adjourned sitting.
Udeze explained that any decision on lifting the suspension would be subject to the committee’s findings, particularly regarding the level of compliance by the affected lawmaker with the conditions attached to his suspension.
The committee is expected to present its recommendations at the next plenary session for consideration.
Udemezue’s current suspension is due to expire on February 26, 2026.
