Alwan Hassan, a spokesperson for the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign council, has alleged that some ministers pay billions of naira to secure appointments and seek to recover the money after taking office.

Speaking during an interview with Arise News on Thursday, Hassan defended President Bola Tinubu’s record ahead of the 2027 election, highlighting government projects in education, electricity, technology and pension payments while arguing that the administration’s achievements would help the APC regain states it lost in 2023.

“A lot of ministers pay billions and billions, and you know, to get themselves appointed, the first thing they think of is how to recoup that money,” Hassan said.

APC Targets Northern States Ahead Of 2027

Hassan said Tinubu’s performance as president would strengthen the APC’s chances in states where he lost in 2023, including Bauchi and Kano.

Tinubu lost Bauchi to Atiku Abubakar and Kano to Rabiu Kwankwaso in the last presidential election.

“In 2023, Asiwaju was a candidate. He was not the president. In 2027, he’s a president for four years,” Hassan said.

He cited the renovation of 287 primary schools and more than 4,000 classrooms through the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) as examples of the administration’s achievements.

Hassan Defends Electricity And Technology Projects

Hassan said Tinubu had approved more than ₦4 trillion for electricity meters, arguing that metering households was an important step towards addressing Nigeria’s power challenges.

“There is no way you fix power issue without having every household powered,” Hassan said.

He also highlighted NASENI’s work on electric vehicles, surveillance drones and local ammunition production.

“We refuse to campaign with food, we’re going to be campaigning with technology,” he said.

Hassan defended the administration’s record on electricity and technology, arguing that its investments and projects showed progress.

Hassan Cites Pension Payments

Hassan also defended the administration’s handling of pension liabilities, saying it had released funds to settle outstanding payments owed to retired federal civil servants.

He cited a new exit benefit scheme intended to improve the payment of retirement entitlements.

Questioned on how the government could sustain its commitments while struggling to fund its budgets, Hassan praised Tinubu’s direct oversight of public expenditure.

Hassan maintained that the administration’s record would help the APC strengthen its support ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
