A Federal High Court in Awa Ibom has sentenced the governorship candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) Bassey Albert to 42 years in prison for fraud.
Albert was arraigned on a six-count charge by the Ecomonic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in 2019 for allegedly obtaining six vehicles for 204 million while serving as the states financial commissioner.
According to reports, he obtained one of the vehicles from Jide Omokore, an associate of Diezani Alison Madueke, former minister of petroleum.
The Presiding Judge, Agatha Okeke, found the senator guilty of the crime. As a result, he was sentenced to Ikot Ekpene Correctional Centre to serve his jail term.
Albert was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He joined the Young Progressives Party in July where he won the party’s ticket for the 2023 governorship election.
