China’s President Xi Jinping has warned US President Donald Trump to exercise caution when supplying weapons to Taiwan, describing the self-governed island as “China’s territory” and “the most important issue” in China-US relations.
In an interview with state media following Wednesday’s phone call, Xi told Trump, “The United States must handle the issue of arms sales to Taiwan with prudence.”
“Just as the United States has its concerns, China for its part also has concerns,” Xi added. “If the two sides work in the same direction in the spirit of equality, respect and mutual benefit, we can surely find ways to address each other’s concerns.”
Trump described the call as “excellent” and “long and thorough,” noting plans for a visit to China in April, which he said he “very much looks forward to.” He also highlighted Beijing’s consideration of purchasing 20 million tonnes of US soybeans, up from the current 12 million tonnes.
The leaders also discussed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the situation in Iran, and China’s oil and gas purchases from the US. Xi emphasised that Beijing “must safeguard Taiwan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity” and stressed the importance of resolving differences to maintain stable bilateral ties.
China has repeatedly pledged to “reunify” with Taiwan, including by force if necessary, while the US maintains formal ties with Beijing but continues to supply Taiwan with advanced military equipment. In December, the Trump administration approved a $11 billion arms package for the island, drawing strong condemnation from Beijing.
Xi’s call with Trump follows recent visits by Western leaders seeking to strengthen relations with China, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and occurred hours after Xi spoke virtually with Russia’s Vladimir Putin, highlighting the deepening ties between Beijing and Moscow.
