Chinese President Xi Jinping has arrived in Cairo for a state visit to Egypt, with talks with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi expected to focus on strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation.
Xi arrived in the Egyptian capital on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, aboard a special plane, accompanied by his wife, Peng Liyuan.
President El-Sisi and his wife welcomed the Chinese president and his spouse at Cairo International Airport.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry said honour guards stood along both sides of the red carpet, while Egyptian youths waved the national flags of China and Egypt to welcome Xi and Peng.
Xi, who is visiting Egypt at the invitation of El-Sisi, also delivered a written statement conveying “sincere greetings and best wishes” from the Chinese government and people to their Egyptian counterparts.
The Chinese president described China and Egypt as ancient civilisations with a traditional friendship that has endured and grown stronger over thousands of years.
Xi said the two countries had remained committed to cooperation and mutual benefit throughout the 70 years since establishing diplomatic relations, despite changes in the international and regional environment.
“In recent years, together with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, I have guided the China-Egypt comprehensive strategic partnership to achieve leapfrog development,” Xi said.
He said the two countries now enjoy “solid political mutual trust, fruitful mutually beneficial cooperation, and close and robust multilateral coordination”.
According to Xi, the relationship between China and Egypt has become an example of friendship and solidarity among developing countries.
He said his discussions with El-Sisi would cover China-Egypt relations, bilateral cooperation as well as international and regional issues of mutual concern.
“During this visit, I will have an in-depth exchange of views with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on China-Egypt relations, all-round bilateral cooperation, and international and regional issues of mutual concern,” Xi said.
He added that the talks would seek to jointly chart the course for the development of the China-Egypt comprehensive strategic partnership and “open a new chapter in the history of China-Egypt friendship”.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry said Xi was accompanied by Cai Qi, Secretary of the Secretariat of the Chinese Communist Party, Foreign Minister Wang Yi and other senior officials.
Chinese Ambassador to Egypt Liao Liqiang was also at the airport to welcome the Chinese delegation.
