Wike-Backed PDP Faction Re-Elects Chairman, Secretary At Abuja Convention

Wike-backed PDP faction re-elects Mohammed, Anyanwu at Abuja convention, as leaders urge unity ahead of 2027 elections.

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has re-elected Abdulrahman Mohammed and Samuel Anyanwu as national chairman and national secretary, respectively.

The duo, alongside other members of the National Working Committee (NWC), were returned unopposed through a consensus arrangement on Sunday at an elective national convention held at the velodrome of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium.

Their re-election followed a motion moved by Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, senator representing Kogi Central, to dissolve the party’s national caretaker committee, paving the way for the emergence of a new leadership.

Addressing delegates at the convention, former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido, called on aggrieved members to return to the party fold.

“We are willing to forgive everyone. Come back, stay focused, and return to the PDP,” he said.

Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, expressed optimism about the party’s future, insisting it remains a formidable political force.

“The PDP is alive, active, and here to stay. It is deeply rooted in this country and firmly in the minds of Nigerians,” he said.

Also speaking, House of Representatives Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, urged members to close ranks ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“We need to recover the power that we have lost. We must come together to recover our country. Every member has a responsibility,” he said.

Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro, said members who opposed reconciliation efforts had effectively exited the party.

“Those who insisted there would be no peace in the PDP have all negotiated their way out of the party. We now have only two governors,” he said.

He also praised Wike for his continued loyalty to the PDP.

“Wike has remained steadfast in the PDP. He must be commended,” Moro added.

In his remarks, Wike called on party members to recommit to rebuilding the PDP, stressing that leadership demands responsibility and dedication. He expressed confidence that the party would present candidates in the 2027 elections and reclaim its mandate from defectors.
