President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Wednesday, officially commissioned the Afam II Power Plant in Rivers State, describing the occasion as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s journey towards energy security and sustainable development.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Tinubu lauded the swift completion of the 180-megawatt power facility, which he said was achieved within just 16 months. He praised the effort as “a key achievement emanating from the enterprising Nigerian spirit.”
“Today is a good day for Nigeria,” Tinubu declared. “We gather to celebrate another key achievement that puts our country first. The completion of Afam II is a testament to what we can accomplish through collaboration, tenacity, and great commitment.”
He commended the Rivers State Government for its role in promoting the project and acknowledged the private sector’s contributions—particularly Sahara Power Group, First Independent Power Limited, and Crescendo Nigeria Limited—for their investments in Nigeria’s energy future.
“The plant’s 180-megawatt contribution to the national grid goes beyond boosting power generation,” he said. “It will energise homes, businesses, industries, hospitals, and illuminate the path toward a better Nigeria.”
President Tinubu reiterated that achieving a stable power supply remains a core priority under his administration. He disclosed that he has charged the Minister of Power, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), and other stakeholders in the power value chain to work collaboratively and with urgency to “light up Nigeria.”
“We strongly feel the support of Nigerians as we continue with our reforms and strategies. We assure you that we will uphold all global guidelines and best practices, and we welcome the continued cooperation of our international partners, including the United States and other development allies,” he added.
The president emphasized the importance of electricity in national development, describing it as “the lifeblood and the vessel of industrialisation.”
“To my fellow Nigerians, I need you—we need you. Together, we will illuminate the future of our country sustainably,” he said, urging national unity and continued cooperation in the quest for energy transformation.
Concluding his remarks, Tinubu declared the plant open for operation, stating: “To the glory of God, I have the pleasure to declare Afam II power plant commissioned today, June 4, 2025.”
The Afam II Power Plant is expected to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s power grid, improving supply reliability and advancing the country’s ambition to become a globally competitive economy through energy-driven growth.
