US House Approves Trump’s Comprehensive Tax, Spending Bill

The US House has passed a sweeping legislative package championed by Trump, covering major tax and spending reforms.

The US House of Representatives has passed a sweeping tax and spending bill backed by President Donald Trump, marking a major step in his push to reshape the country’s fiscal landscape.

The legislation was approved by a slim margin of 215 to 214 and now heads to the Senate, where it is expected to face further scrutiny. Some Republican senators have already signalled their intention to seek changes to key provisions in the bill.

Described by Trump as a “big, beautiful, bill,” the proposed legislation aims to extend tax cuts introduced during his first term in office, eliminate federal taxes on tipped income, and significantly boost funding for the military and border security.

House Speaker Mike Johnson hailed the bill as “once-in-a-generation legislation” and praised its potential to bring lasting reform to the nation’s tax and spending priorities.

“This is a bold step forward that reflects our commitment to American families, workers, and national security,” he said.

However, the bill has drawn strong criticism from Democrats, who argue that it would disproportionately benefit the wealthy while increasing costs for middle- and lower-income families.

According to estimates by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the bill could add approximately $2.3 trillion (£1.7 trillion) to the US national debt over the next decade.

Despite the fanfare surrounding its passage in the House, the bill’s future remains uncertain. With the Senate expected to debate its content and potentially demand revisions, the legislation still faces significant hurdles before becoming law.
