President Donald Trump has announced via his Truth Social platform that the United States and Mexico have agreed to extend their current trade deal for 90 days, preventing the imposition of higher tariffs on certain Mexican goods set to begin on 1 August.
The extension offers both countries additional time to negotiate a more comprehensive agreement.
In his post, Trump said he hopes to finalise a trade deal with Mexico within the extended timeframe. He also revealed that Mexico has committed to “immediately terminate its Non-Tariff Trade Barriers,” which he described as numerous.
Trump emphasised the unique challenges and opportunities posed by the shared border, noting ongoing cooperation on issues related to security, including drug trafficking, drug distribution, and illegal immigration into the United States.
Highlighting an improved relationship with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Trump said the two leaders had a phone call on Thursday morning and expressed growing mutual understanding. “More and more, we are getting to know and understand each other,” he noted.
“The complexities of a Deal with Mexico are somewhat different than other Nations because of both the problems, and assets, of the Border,” Trump wrote. He concluded that the extension reflects a commitment to continued collaboration and progress between the two neighbours.
