UN Warns Thousands Of Babies In Gaza Risk Death Without Aid As UK, France, Canada Caution Israel Over Offensive

The UN has warned that 14,000 babies in Gaza could face death if urgent aid is not provided in 48 hours

The United Nations has issued an urgent warning that as many as 14,000 babies in Gaza could die within the next 48 hours unless more humanitarian aid is allowed to enter the territory. Tom Fletcher, the UN’s humanitarian chief, told the BBC’s Today programme that despite Israel lifting an 11-week blockade on aid on Monday, only five lorries had entered Gaza, and none of the aid had yet reached those in need.

“I want to save as many of these 14,000 babies as we can in the next 48 hours,” Fletcher said, calling for immediate and unrestricted humanitarian access.

The situation on the ground worsened overnight, with Israeli air strikes reportedly killing at least 38 Palestinians in the space of just 30 minutes, according to local medics speaking to the BBC. The renewed military action has prompted international concern, with the UK, France, and Canada urging Israel to halt its offensive and allow greater aid access.

The three countries released a joint statement warning Israel over its escalating military campaign, stressing the need to prioritise the protection of civilians and humanitarian relief efforts.

In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the war could “end tomorrow” if Hamas were to release all remaining hostages and surrender. Israeli officials say 58 hostages remain in Gaza, with up to 23 believed to still be alive.
