UN Chief Guterres Cancels Davos Trip Due To ‘A Bad Cold’

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has cancelled his World Economic Forum appearance due to “a bad cold”, missing his scheduled address.

UN Chief Antonio Guterres

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has cancelled his planned trip to Switzerland to attend the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting in Davos, where he was scheduled to deliver a special address.

A spokesperson for the UN confirmed the development on Tuesday, citing health reasons. According to Rolando Gomez, Guterres had to withdraw from the high-level gathering after falling ill.

“The Secretary-General has, unfortunately, had to cancel his participation at the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting in Davos. It was scheduled for tomorrow, but he’s got a bad cold,” Gomez said in response to questions from reporters.

The World Economic Forum brings together world leaders, policymakers, business executives and civil society representatives to discuss pressing global economic and political issues. Guterres’ absence means the UN will not be represented at the event at the secretary-general level this year.

No further details were provided on whether the address would be rescheduled or delivered in an alternative format.
