Ukraine will require at least $120 billion in defence spending for the coming year, Defence Minister Denys Shmyhal announced on Tuesday, as the country continues its efforts to repel Russia’s full-scale invasion.
In a statement posted on the Telegram messaging app, Shmyhal said that Kyiv is actively engaging with international partners to secure nearly half of the needed funding from abroad.
“Negotiations are ongoing with NATO and EU members,”he said, noting that “Ukraine seeks $60 billion in funding from partners.”
The remainder, according to officials, would need to be sourced from domestic revenues, loans, or additional international support.
The funding is expected to cover a wide range of defence needs, including weapons procurement, ammunition, drone production, cyber defence infrastructure, and support for personnel. With the war now in its third year, Ukrainian officials have emphasised that sustained financial and military assistance remains critical to their long-term resilience.
