At least two people have been killed and six injured in a “massive” Ukrainian drone attack on the Moscow region, Russian officials say.
Moscow Region Governor Andrei Vorobyev said a 44-year-old woman was killed after a drone struck a three-storey residential building in Sofyino on Sunday. Five people, including two children, were injured.
An elderly man was also killed after a drone hit a private house in the Orekhovo-Zuevo district, Vorobyev said.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said about 450 drones heading towards the capital had been shot down in what he described as an “unprecedented attack.”
He said a drone struck a building near one of Moscow’s main boulevards and that a facility at an oil refinery was damaged.
Sobyanin said the attack was an attempt to disrupt Russia’s parliamentary election, with Sunday marking the third and final day of voting.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Ukrainian forces had struck what he described as a key Russian oil facility and a logistics site in the Moscow region.
He said the facilities represented “billions of dollars that sustain the war machine.”
Videos shared on social media appeared to show explosions over Moscow and a burning warehouse. The footage has not been independently verified.
The attacks also disrupted air travel. Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport warned of temporary restrictions overnight, while Vnukovo airport halted all arrivals and departures.
The restrictions were lifted by Sunday morning, although both airports warned passengers of possible delays.
The attack came as Russian strikes killed at least eight people in Ukraine, according to Ukrainian officials.
A mother and her two young children were killed in a Russian attack in Fastiv, in the Kyiv region, on Saturday, regional head Tymur Tkachenko said.
He later said another child injured in a separate attack in Vyshhorod, north of Kyiv, had died in hospital.
In the north-eastern Sumy region, four people were killed when a Russian drone struck the car they were travelling in, local official Oleh Hryhorov said.
Russia and Ukraine have intensified attacks on energy infrastructure, transport facilities and logistics hubs in recent days.
Both sides have continued striking energy targets despite US President Donald Trump saying the two countries had agreed to stop attacks on energy infrastructure.
Trump also signed a sanctions bill on Friday that gives the US president powers to impose tariffs of up to 100% on major buyers of Russian oil and gas, including China and India.
Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
