UEFA has declared it has lost confidence in FIFA president; Gianni Infantino, following the collapse of his controversial proposal to sell a stake in FIFA’s commercial business, including World Cup revenues, to private equity investors.
The plan faced strong opposition from UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), CONCACAF and several national football associations, who argued it would mortgage football’s future and reduce FIFA’s independence.
The backlash also led to the resignation of Infantino’s senior adviser, Carlos Cordeiro, who publicly criticised the proposal before stepping down. Although FIFA has now abandoned the investment plan, UEFA says rebuilding trust in the organisation has “only just begun.”
The latest dispute marks one of the biggest challenges to Infantino’s leadership, with growing calls for greater transparency, accountability and consultation in FIFA’s decision-making after weeks of criticism from football’s governing bodies.
