An Ekiti State High Court has sentenced two men to death by hanging for the 2022 kidnapping of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) official Omoboade Adesina after finding them guilty of the offence.
The court convicted Ibrahim Abubakar and Abdullahi Abubakar over the April 22, 2022 abduction of Adesina, while acquitting a third defendant, Usman Abubakar, after ruling that the prosecution failed to prove his involvement in the crime beyond reasonable doubt.
Delivering judgment, the Chief Judge of Ekiti State, Justice Lekan Ogunmoye, held that the prosecution had established its case against Ibrahim and Abdullahi beyond reasonable doubt and sentenced both men to death by hanging.
Justice Ogunmoye said the identification parade conducted during the investigation and the analysis of call data records were crucial pieces of evidence that linked the two convicts to the kidnapping.
The three defendants were arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) before being arraigned in court over the incident.
The court, however, discharged and acquitted Usman Abubakar after holding that there was insufficient evidence to connect him with the kidnapping.
The judgment brings to a close the prosecution of the three men over the abduction of the NYSC official, which occurred in Ekiti State in April 2022.
