Saudi shipping company Bahri said Wednesday that two Filipino seafarers were killed while serving aboard its vessel SIDR, which was transiting the Strait of Hormuz on August 31 when a security incident occurred.
Bahri did not disclose further details about the incident or state what caused the sailors’ deaths.
Separately, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported on August 31 that a tanker had been struck by three unidentified projectiles while sailing outbound through the Strait of Hormuz.
It remains unclear whether the incident involving SIDR was connected to the reported projectile strike, as Bahri has not provided any information linking the two events.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical route for global oil and gas shipments, making security incidents in the waterway a major concern for international shipping and energy markets.
Bahri said it remains in continuous contact with the vessel and is working closely with relevant authorities and maritime industry stakeholders to monitor the situation.
The company added that it would continue coordinating with the appropriate authorities as further details surrounding the incident are assessed.
The latest development follows an earlier incident involving another Bahri vessel, the Wedyan supertanker, near the Strait of Hormuz about a month ago. The vessel was sailing off the coast of Oman at the time.
The Red Sea attacks also involved two additional Bahri ships, AMZAN and MASA, following the Yemen-based, Iran-aligned Houthi movement’s announcement of a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia.
