US President Donald Trump has announced he will not attend the 2026 Super Bowl, citing dissatisfaction with the event’s entertainment lineup, including performances by Bad Bunny and Green Day, as a major reason for his decision.
The president made the remarks while speaking to the New York Post, explaining why he would not travel for the NFL’s biggest event this year, despite making history in 2025 as the first sitting US president to attend a Super Bowl. Trump said distance was initially a factor, but later pointed directly to the artists selected for the halftime and opening ceremonies.
Discussing the performers, Trump said, “I’m anti-them. I think it’s a terrible choice. All it does is sow hatred. Terrible.” Bad Bunny is billed for the halftime show, while Green Day is expected to handle the opening ceremony.
Trump has previously expressed confusion over Bad Bunny’s selection. Last year, he said, “I’ve never heard of him… I don’t know who he is. I don’t know why they’re doing it. It’s crazy. And then they blame it on some promoter they hired to pick up entertainment, I think it’s absolutely ridiculous.”
Bad Bunny, one of the world’s most streamed artists, has also been vocal about political concerns in the United States. In recent comments, the Puerto Rican star revealed he would avoid touring in the US for now, explaining that he fears immigration authorities could target events. He has since continued to draw attention both musically and socially.
Green Day, on the other hand, is a veteran American rock band known for its long standing criticism of Trump and the Republican Party. Their songs American Idiot and Jesus of Suburbia are widely associated with anti-establishment and political messaging, a stance that has often put the band at odds with conservative leadership.
Trump’s decision marks a shift from last year, when his attendance at the Super Bowl drew national attention. With Super Bowl 2026 approaching, the president’s comments have added a political layer to what is traditionally one of the biggest sporting and entertainment spectacles in the United States.
The NFL has not responded to Trump’s remarks, and organizers have continued preparations for the event, with Bad Bunny and Green Day remaining central to the planned performances.
