US President Donald Trump is set to hold separate phone calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday, as part of renewed diplomatic efforts aimed at securing a ceasefire in the ongoing war in Ukraine.
According to officials, Trump will first speak with Putin at 14:00 GMT before engaging in subsequent discussions with Zelenskyy and NATO leaders. The conversations come as international pressure mounts on all sides to de-escalate the conflict, which has continued to devastate parts of Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy met with senior US and European officials in Rome over the weekend, where he reiterated Ukraine’s commitment to “real diplomacy” in the pursuit of a ceasefire. His efforts are being closely watched by global leaders eager for a breakthrough.
In a separate call, the leaders of France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom discussed the Ukraine crisis with Trump. A spokesperson for the UK government stated that the group stressed the urgent need for an “unconditional ceasefire” and called on Putin to engage in peace talks “seriously.”
These diplomatic developments follow what Ukraine has described as Russia’s largest drone attack since the beginning of the war, with 273 explosive drones and decoys launched across several regions.
Russian state news agency RIA quoted Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, who said Monday’s discussion with Trump would reflect the outcomes of recent talks between Russian and Ukrainian officials held in Istanbul. Peskov described the upcoming conversation between Trump and Putin as “important,” adding that Russia’s positions have already been clearly communicated.
The international community now awaits the results of these high-level exchanges as hopes for a ceasefire rise amid worsening battlefield conditions.
