US President Donald Trump says the United States carried out a “large-scale strike” on Venezuela early Saturday, capturing President Nicolás Maduro and his wife and flying them out of the country.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote: “The United States of America has successfully carried out a large scale strike against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolás Maduro, who has been, along with his wife, captured and flown out of the Country.”
Trump added that the operation was executed in conjunction with US law enforcement and that “details will follow.”
The claims come amid reports of explosions and low-flying aircraft over Caracas, Venezuela’s capital, in the early hours of Saturday. Multiple international outlets and witness accounts cited explosions near key military bases and aerial activity in the region.
Venezuelan government officials, however, have denounced what they characterised as a military aggression by the United States.
According to reports, Caracas and at least three surrounding states — Miranda, La Guaira and Aragua — experienced explosions, and authorities urged citizens to mobilise against a foreign attack.
In reaction, Venezuela declared a state of emergency and called for resistance against what it described as “imperialist aggression” while asserting its sovereign right to defend the nation.
Despite the assertions by Trump and the reported explosions in Venezuela, there has been no official US government statement corroborating Trump’s claims, and defence authorities including the Pentagon have not publicly verified such an operation. International news agencies are continuing to monitor and report on the rapidly unfolding situation.
