US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that Russian President Vladimir Putin had “gone absolutely CRAZY” following Moscow’s largest aerial assault of the war on Ukraine, and signalled he may impose further sanctions on Russia. However, Trump also took aim at Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, criticising his conduct amid the ongoing conflict.
“Something has happened to him. He has gone absolutely CRAZY!” Trump wrote on Truth Social, referring to Putin. “I’ve always said that he wants ALL of Ukraine, not just a piece of it, and maybe that’s proving to be right, but if he does, it will lead to the downfall of Russia!”
Despite condemning Putin’s aggression, Trump also rebuked Zelensky, claiming his comments were inflaming tensions. “He is doing his Country no favours by talking the way he does. Everything out of his mouth causes problems, I don’t like it, and it better stop,” Trump posted.
Speaking to reporters in Morristown, New Jersey, Trump said of the Russian leader: “I don’t know what’s wrong with him. What the hell happened to him? Right? He’s killing a lot of people. I’m not happy about that.” He added that the US was considering additional sanctions against Moscow in response to the escalating violence.
Neither the Kremlin nor Zelensky’s office immediately responded to Trump’s comments.
Trump’s remarks came after Russia launched a massive overnight aerial barrage, firing at least 367 drones and missiles at Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. The attack killed at least 12 civilians, including three children in the northern Zhytomyr region, according to Ukrainian officials. It was the largest strike in terms of weapons launched since the war began.
While Trump has repeatedly called for a negotiated end to the war, the conflict has intensified, with Russian forces making gains in eastern Ukraine and both sides deploying swarms of drones across the front lines. Despite diplomatic efforts by global powers, the war continues to escalate with no resolution in sight.
