Trump announced Coale’s appointment on Sunday, praising the lawyer for his diplomatic efforts that have helped secure the release of hundreds of prisoners, as well as American and allied citizens.
Coale has spent more than a year engaging with Belarusian authorities. His efforts contributed to Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko pardoning 15 prisoners last month following discussions with the US envoy.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Coale had helped secure the return of more than 65 Americans and allied citizens from Belarus over the past year.
The president also credited Coale with negotiating the release of more than 800 political prisoners from several countries across Eastern Europe.
Coale will replace Adam Boehler, whom Trump said helped bring 196 hostages home during his tenure.
According to Trump, Boehler will remain involved in the administration in a new capacity as a senior adviser.
Trump also said Boehler played a role in securing the release of a former American marine from Russia in August.
