President Donald Trump on Thursday hailed the “truly great friendship” he has forged with Chinese President Xi Jinping as the Chinese leader began a highly anticipated state visit to the United States.
Trump and Xi met with their aides for opening remarks ahead of formal talks, with the US president highlighting his long-standing relationship with the Chinese leader.
Despite several contentious issues between the United States and China, Trump focused on his personal ties with Xi as the two leaders began their discussions.
Meanwhile, a federal judge has temporarily blocked Trump’s decision to bar CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House, ordering the administration to restore the outlets’ access.
However, reporters from the three organisations said they remained blocked several hours after the ruling was issued early Thursday.
Elsewhere, Trump’s nominee to lead the Food and Drug Administration is expected to face questions from senators on Thursday, with lawmakers likely to focus on vaccines, the abortion pill and other medical products that have come under increased scrutiny at the agency.
