President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sent a high powered delegation to Burkina Faso, led by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, reaffirming the two countries’ commitment to closer cooperation and stronger regional integration. The visit underscored efforts to strengthen political, security, and economic ties between Nigeria and Burkina Faso.
The delegation, which arrived in Ouagadougou on Wednesday, met with Burkina Faso’s President Captain Ibrahim Traoré. Ambassador Tuggar delivered a message of solidarity and fraternity from President Tinubu and engaged in discussions on enhancing bilateral relations, regional security, and economic collaboration. Talks focused on coordinated responses to regional security challenges and collective action through existing sub-regional frameworks.
During the visit, the two governments also amicably resolved issues concerning Nigerian Air Force pilots and crew, showcasing the effectiveness of dialogue in handling sensitive matters. President Traoré expressed gratitude to President Tinubu, stating the importance of “closer collaboration, particularly in addressing shared security and development challenges across the Sahel and the wider West African region.”
Ambassador Tuggar reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to “good neighbourliness and sustained engagement with Burkina Faso,” emphasizing support for initiatives aimed at strengthening regional cohesion, peace, and economic integration. He also highlighted President Tinubu’s readiness to collaborate closely with Burkina Faso to advance stability and development.
Both sides agreed to maintain regular consultations and pursue practical measures to deepen bilateral cooperation and regional integration, reflecting a shared resolve to promote peace, unity, and stability in West Africa. The delegation additionally met with the detained Nigerian crew, who were reported to be in high spirits.
Other members of Nigeria’s delegation included Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed, Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency; Air Vice Marshal A. Y. Abdullahi, Chief of Policy and Plans, Nigerian Air Force; Ambassador Olawale Emmanuel Awe, Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to ECOWAS; and Ambassador Wahab Akande, Chief of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
