President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the death of his predecessor former Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away Sunday afternoon in London at approximately 4:30 p.m., following a prolonged illness.
In an official statement on Sunday signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed deep sorrow at the passing of his immediate predecessor and confirmed he had spoken with the late President’s widow, Mrs Aishat Buhari, offering heartfelt condolences.
As part of immediate arrangements, Vice President Kashim Shettima has been directed to travel to the United Kingdom to accompany the former leader’s remains back to Nigeria.
President Tinubu has also ordered that all national flags be flown at half-staff as a mark of honour and national mourning.
The late Muhammadu Buhari, aged 82, had a long and prominent career in Nigerian leadership, serving as military Head of State from January 1984 to August 1985, and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023.
