President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended warm congratulations to Mark Joseph Carney on his election as Canada’s 24th Prime Minister following the Liberal Party’s victory in the recent parliamentary elections.
In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga on Tuesday, President Tinubu acknowledged the significance of Carney’s electoral win, describing it as a hard-fought triumph at a pivotal moment in Canada’s history.
“President Tinubu congratulates Mr. Mark Joseph Carney on the Liberal Party’s victory and his emergence as Prime Minister, noting the importance of capable leadership in these times,” the statement read.
Carney, an accomplished economist, previously served as Governor of the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013 and the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020.
President Tinubu expressed confidence that Carney’s extensive background in banking and governance would be instrumental in navigating Canada’s current economic and political landscape.
“The President hopes that Carney’s banking and governance experience will guide the country at this crucial moment in its history,” the Statement read.
Reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening ties with Canada, President Tinubu emphasised the importance of deepening collaboration in areas such as education, climate change, and migration. He said his administration looks forward to building a dynamic and forward-looking partnership with the new Canadian government.
The President also paid tribute to the goodwill established under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and expressed optimism that relations between Nigeria and Canada would continue to thrive under Carney’s leadership.
