Tinubu Broke ‘54-Year Jinx’ By Granting South-East’s Request For Development Commission, Says SEDC MD Mark Okoye

SEDC MD Mark Okoye II has hailed Tinubu for breaking a “54-year jinx” by creating a development commission for the South-East region

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has expressed strong satisfaction with the 100-day report of the South-East Development Commission (SEDC), following a briefing by the commission’s Managing Director, Mark Okoye II.

Okoye detailed SEDC’s progress towards its ambitious goal of catalysing a $200 billion regional economy through strategic partnerships with state governments and the private sector. Key initiatives under the commission’s #RenewedHope programme were showcased, demonstrating alignment with the aspirations of South-East communities.

In his statement, Okoye said, “Earlier today, I had the honour of briefing His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, on the 100-day report of the South East Development Commission (SEDC).

“Mr. President expressed strong satisfaction with our progress — from our bold vision to catalyze a $200b regional economy through collaboration with state governments and the private sector, to our #RenewedHope programs and strategy to align SEDC’s efforts with the aspirations of the South East.

“For students of history, this moment is deeply significant. Since the end of the civil war in 1970, no Nigerian President — military or civilian — had granted the South East’s longstanding request for a development commission focused on reconstruction and rehabilitation. Mr. President broke that 54-year jinx. Thank you, Boss.

“Mr. President’s charge to me was clear: fast-track execution and deliver impact.”

The briefing underscores the administration’s commitment to post-conflict reconstruction and rehabilitation in the South-East. Stakeholders now await the detailed rollout of flagship projects announced under SEDC’s mandate, with communities hopeful that the momentum of the first 100 days will translate into lasting economic transformation.
