Timothée Chalamet emerged as one of the biggest winners at this year’s Golden Globe Awards, securing the best actor in a musical or comedy prize and intensifying the race toward the Academy Awards.
The 30-year-old actor claimed the honour for his performance in the table-tennis drama Marty Supreme, defeating a star-studded field that included Leonardo DiCaprio and George Clooney. The win marks Chalamet’s first Golden Globe victory after five nominations.
“This category is stacked with greats,” Chalamet said during his acceptance speech, reflecting on a career he described as shaped by gratitude and perseverance. He thanked his parents and his partner, Kylie Jenner, calling the moment “that much sweeter” after years of near misses.
Despite DiCaprio’s loss in the acting category, his film One Battle After Another dominated the night, winning four awards including best musical or comedy film and best director for Paul Thomas Anderson, who also took home the screenplay prize.
Irish actress Jessie Buckley scored a major upset by winning best actress in a drama for Hamnet, which also claimed the best drama film award. Director Chloe Zhao appeared visibly stunned as the film was announced as the winner, while producer Steven Spielberg praised Zhao as uniquely suited to tell the story.
The ceremony also saw several breakthrough performances recognised. Teyana Taylor won best supporting actress for One Battle After Another, delivering an emotional speech celebrating representation and encouragement for young girls watching at home.
Stellan Skarsgård claimed best supporting actor for Sentimental Value, using his moment on stage to urge audiences to experience cinema on the big screen. Australia’s Rose Byrne won best actress in a musical or comedy for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, thanking her family with characteristic humour.
In the international categories, Brazilian thriller The Secret Agent won best international film, while its star Wagner Moura took best drama actor. Moura dedicated his award to those holding onto their values in difficult times.
Television awards also featured prominently, with British actors Stephen Graham, Erin Doherty and teenage breakout Owen Cooper collecting honours for Netflix drama Adolescence. Cooper, 16, described his success as “mad” and insisted he was still learning his craft.
The Golden Globes’ inaugural best podcast award went to Amy Poehler for Good Hang with Amy Poehler, rounding out a night that officially launches Hollywood’s awards season and sets the tone for the Oscars race ahead.
