The government of Ethiopia’s Tigray region said on Wednesday that its forces had entered what it described as a defensive war against federal troops, following the seizure of the region’s main airport by Tigrayan fighters.
The announcement marks a significant escalation in tensions between Tigray’s regional administration and Ethiopia’s federal government, raising concerns over a possible resurgence of conflict in the northern region.
In a statement, the Tigray administration said its forces were engaged in defensive operations against federal troops but gave few details about the fighting or what had triggered the latest confrontation.
Ethiopia’s federal government did not immediately respond to the Tigray administration’s statement.
Information about the latest clashes remained limited, including details on casualties, the scale of the fighting and the status of other key locations across the region.
