Three Dead, Several Injured In Train Derailment In Southwestern Germany

Three people have been killed and several injured after a passenger train derailed in southwestern Germany

At least three people have died and several others sustained serious injuries after a passenger train derailed in southwestern Germany on Sunday, according to a police statement.

The incident occurred between the towns of Riedlingen and Munderkingen, near the tri-border area of Germany, France, and Switzerland. Authorities in Stuttgart said approximately 100 passengers were on board when two carriages of the regional train veered off the tracks.

The train was operating a roughly 90-kilometre route between the towns of Sigmaringen and Ulm. The cause of the derailment remains unknown, and an investigation is currently underway.

Images released by German news agency DPA showed the train carriages largely intact but derailed and jackknifed into each other, with some lying on their sides.

German national rail operator Deutsche Bahn issued a statement expressing its condolences. “There are many injured. Our thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones,” the company said, adding that it is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.

Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, and rescue efforts were ongoing at the time of reporting.
