The Gombe State Police Command has arrested a 19-year-old man over the alleged killing of a borehole operator working within the Gombe Government House premises.
The incident occurred inside the Gombe State Government House, where the victim, identified as Mallam Umar, also known as “Baba Usama,” was employed as a borehole operator.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Buhari Abdullahi, said the victim was found lying motionless after a distress report was received by the command.
According to the police, preliminary findings showed that the deceased was discovered with his trousers tied around his neck, while a local intoxicant, commonly referred to as rubber solution, was found inserted in his mouth.
The statement said the victim was immediately rushed to the Specialist Hospital in Gombe, where a medical doctor certified him dead. His remains were subsequently deposited at the hospital mortuary for autopsy.
Police investigations, including a review of closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage within the Government House, allegedly linked the incident to one Shuaibu Adamu, also known as “Yaya Mama,” a 19-year-old casual watchman attached to a construction company executing projects within the Government House.
“CCTV footage revealed that the suspect was seen assaulting the deceased prior to his death,” Abdullahi said, adding that the suspect fled the scene immediately after the incident.
Following the development, the Commissioner of Police, Umar Ahmed Chuso, visited the scene and ordered a comprehensive investigation.
The police spokesman disclosed that the suspect was tracked and arrested later that same day at his hideout in Bagadaza Quarters, Gombe.
“During preliminary interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime,” Abdullahi stated.
He added that the suspect remains in police custody while investigations continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the homicide and ensure diligent prosecution in line with the law.
The Gombe State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to justice and the safety of individuals working within and around government facilities, assuring that further updates would be communicated as investigations progress.
