Taylor Swift Says It Feels ‘Weird’ When Fans Treat Songs Like ‘Paternity Tests’

Taylor Swift says fan theories about her songs can go too far, calling comparisons to “paternity tests” uncomfortable.

Taylor Swift has spoken about how fans try to link her songs to people in her life, saying it can feel “weird” when it goes too far.

In an interview with The New York Times, Swift explained how she writes her music and how some listeners try to decode who each song is about. She said this often leads to intense speculation online.

She said some fans act like they are solving a case, trying to match songs to real people. “When it gets a little bit weird for me is when people act like it’s sort of like a paternity test. Like, ‘This song’s about this person.’ Because I’m like, ‘That dude didn’t write the song. I did.’”

Swift said she understands it comes with being a global pop star, but she still tries to stay focused on her work and her connection to it. She added that once a song is released, people will interpret it in their own way.

She also said criticism has shaped some of her music. She pointed to songs like “Blank Space” and “Anti-Hero” as examples of work inspired by public opinions about her life and personality.

At the same time, Swift warned that too much online feedback can affect artists. She advised younger musicians not to spend too much time reading comments.
