Szoboszlai’s Stoppage-Time Penalty Gains Liverpool Point At Newcastle

Liverpool snatch a stoppage time draw against Newcastle after Szoboszlai converted a stoppage-time penalty at St James’ Park.

Liverpool salvaged a dramatic 2-2 draw against Newcastle United from their first game of the season at St James’ Park, after Dominik Szoboszlai converted a stoppage-time penalty to deny the hosts victory.

Anthony Elanga gave Newcastle an early lead in the fifth minute, capitalising on a quick counter-attack to put Liverpool under pressure from the outset.

The Reds responded after the break, with Cody Gakpo equalising in the 55th minute. Newcastle, however, restored their advantage just two minutes later when Joe Willock found the net to make it 2-1.

Liverpool continued to push for an equaliser as the game entered stoppage time, eventually earning a penalty after Lewis Hall brought down Victor Muñoz inside the box.

Szoboszlai stepped up and calmly converted from the spot in the ninth minute of added time, rescuing a point for Liverpool in a thrilling Premier League encounter.

Newcastle were left frustrated after coming within seconds of securing all three points, while Liverpool will take confidence from their late comeback.
