Sudan’s New Prime Minister Dissolves Caretaker Government, Promises Stability

Sudan’s new Prime Minister Kamil Idris has dissolved the country’s caretaker government, pledging neutrality, stability, and national reconstruction

Sudan’s newly appointed Prime Minister, Kamil Idris, has dissolved the country’s caretaker government, state news agency SUNA reported late Sunday. The announcement comes just a day after Idris took the oath of office, becoming Sudan’s first prime minister since the 2021 military-led coup.

The move signals a significant shift in Sudan’s leadership amid ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). While SUNA did not specify when a new cabinet would be announced, Idris’s action marks the beginning of what could be a major political reorganisation.

Idris was appointed by army chief and head of state Abdel Fattah al-Burhan. His appointment comes at a time of deep national crisis, as fighting between the army and RSF continues to devastate communities and displace millions.

In his first speech as prime minister, Idris pledged neutrality, promising to keep an equal distance from all political factions. He also prioritised national stability, security, and the long-term reconstruction of Sudan.

Meanwhile, the RSF, which has been in a violent standoff with government forces since last year, announced earlier in 2024 that it planned to establish its own parallel government in alliance with select political groups—a development that could further complicate Sudan’s fragile political landscape.

The country remains in urgent need of a unified, civilian-led transitional process, but Idris’s next steps—and the shape of his forthcoming government—are yet to be revealed.
