Spotify Introduces Setting To Exclude Kids’ Music From Recommendations

Spotify introduces a new setting allowing parents to keep children’s music from influencing their recommendations and Wrapped results.

Spotify has introduced a new setting that allows users to prevent children’s and family music from influencing their personalised recommendations.

The feature begins rolling out globally on mobile to both Free and Premium users on September 15, giving parents and guardians greater control over the music that shapes their listening profile.

With the setting disabled, users can still listen to, search for and create playlists featuring children’s and family music, but those streams will no longer influence recommendations such as Discover Weekly, Daily Mix and Wrapped.

Spotify said the update is designed for parents who regularly play music for their children but may not want those songs reflected in their personal listening preferences.

“Parents love using Spotify to play music for their families. But parents don’t always share the same taste as their young children,” the company said.

The category includes music from animated and live-action films, family television shows, nursery rhymes, lullabies, educational songs and other family-oriented content.

Spotify said the change also applies retroactively, meaning children’s music already played will no longer count towards personalised listening insights, including a user’s Wrapped top song or artist.

The setting is available through the Spotify mobile app by going to Settings and privacy, selecting Content and display, and switching off Include kids and family music in taste profile.

Spotify said changes to personalised recommendations may take up to 48 hours to take effect.

The update builds on other parental tools available on the platform, including managed accounts for young listeners, which give children their own space to discover music while allowing parents and guardians to manage their listening experience.
