Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day has recorded one of the biggest box office openings in cinematic history, earning an estimated $355 million during its domestic debut weekend, narrowly missing the all-time opening weekend record set by Avengers: Endgame.
The superhero blockbuster finished just $2 million behind the $357 million domestic opening achieved by Disney’s Avengers: Endgame in 2019, making Brand New Day only the second Hollywood film to surpass the $300 million mark during its opening weekend in North America.
The film opened to record-breaking Thursday preview sales before grossing $169.3 million on Friday, including advance ticket sales, followed by $101.5 million on Saturday. Sony projected an additional $84 million in ticket sales for Sunday, bringing the estimated domestic opening weekend total to $355 million, with final figures expected on Monday.
Internationally, Brand New Day added an estimated $572 million, including an impressive $121 million from China, pushing its global opening weekend gross to an estimated $927 million.
Industry analysts said the film’s performance represents a major boost for cinemas worldwide.
Paul Dergarabedian, Head of Marketplace Trends at Rentrak, described the opening as a landmark moment for the theatrical exhibition industry.
“What this means for movie theaters cannot be overstated. This sets up an incredible month of August and increases the likelihood that this summer will be the biggest in terms of revenue since 2019, surpassing the benchmark $4 billion threshold. No small feat.”
According to data from EntTelligence, an estimated 24.1 million moviegoers visited cinemas across the United States and Canada to watch Brand New Day during its opening weekend.
Premium large-format screenings accounted for approximately 21 per cent of all tickets sold, with moviegoers paying an average ticket price of $18.55.
Although the film was not released in IMAX theatres—whose screens are currently dedicated to Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey—other premium formats delivered record-breaking results.
Dolby Cinema posted its highest-ever domestic box office weekend, generating $10 million from Brand New Day. ScreenX recorded $7 million in ticket sales, while 4DX earned more than $5.2 million, both setting new domestic records for their parent company, CJ4DPlex.
Marvel Studios President and the film’s producer, Kevin Feige, welcomed the overwhelming audience response.
“This is a truly phenomenal opening, and we are grateful to audiences everywhere for coming out and experiencing our film the way it was meant to be seen. This debut reflects the enduring power of Marvel’s characters, and the connection they continue to have with fans around the world — and, as audiences saw, it sets up exciting things to come.”
