At least six Americans remain wrongfully imprisoned in Venezuela, according to Richard Grenell, US President Donald Trump’s envoy. Grenell made the statement on Monday, just days after successfully securing the release of six other Americans from Venezuelan detention.
In an interview on the Megyn Kelly Show on YouTube, Grenell confirmed that at least six US citizens are still being held. Venezuelan officials have accused most detained Americans of extremism, with some labeled as high-level mercenaries. The Venezuelan government frequently claims that foreign detainees and opposition figures are conspiring with the US to commit extremist acts, a charge that US officials have consistently denied.
Grenell recently met with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in Caracas as part of efforts to bring detained Americans home. His visit came amid the Trump administration’s strict immigration policies, which include plans to deport undocumented immigrants from Venezuela and other Latin American countries. Despite ongoing political tensions, negotiations for the release of wrongfully detained Americans continue.
