Sinner Knocked Out By Francisco Cerúndolo In French Open Second Round

Jannik Sinner squandered a two-set lead before physical problems triggered a stunning five-set defeat to Cerundolo in Paris.

World number one Jannik Sinner crashed out of the French Open in dramatic fashion on Thursday after physical problems derailed his bid for a maiden Roland Garros title and a career Grand Slam in a five-set defeat to Juan Manuel Cerundolo.

Sinner appeared firmly in control after racing to a two-set lead and moving 5-1 ahead in the third set on a scorching afternoon in Paris. However, the Italian’s challenge unravelled after he began struggling physically and required medical treatment off the court.

The 23-year-old dropped three consecutive games before eventually losing the third set 7-5, allowing Cerundolo back into the contest.

The Argentine seized the momentum from that point, dominating the fourth and fifth sets 6-1, 6-1 to complete a remarkable comeback victory and stun the top seed.

Sinner’s exit ended his hopes of claiming a first French Open crown and completing the career Grand Slam, having already won titles at the Australian Open, US Open and Wimbledon.

Cerundolo, meanwhile, advanced to the next round after producing one of the biggest upsets of the tournament.
