Vice President Kashim Shettima on Thursday departed Abuja for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to represent President Bola Tinubu at the 2026 African Union (AU) Summit.
According to a statement issued by the Media Assistant to the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, the Summit is themed “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.”
The summit will focus on strengthening continental commitments to sustainable water management, improved sanitation systems, and advancing the broader development objectives outlined in the AU’s Agenda 2063 framework.
While in Addis Ababa, Shettima will participate in the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of AU Heads of State and Government, as well as the 30th General Assembly, scheduled for February 14 and 15, 2026, respectively.
On the sidelines of the summit, the Vice President is expected to attend high-level side events and hold bilateral meetings with African political and business leaders.
The engagements, according to the Presidency, are aimed at deepening Nigeria’s diplomatic, economic and strategic partnerships across the continent.
Shettima is accompanied by cabinet ministers and other senior government officials and is expected to return to Nigeria at the conclusion of his official engagements.
