Sha’Carri Richardson Apologizes to Boyfriend Christian Coleman After Domestic Violence Arrest

World champion sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson apologizes publicly to Christian Coleman following her recent domestic violence arrest

Sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson has publicly addressed her recent arrest on a domestic violence charge and issued a heartfelt apology to her boyfriend, fellow sprinter Christian Coleman.

On Monday night, Richardson shared a video on Instagram acknowledging that she put herself in a “compromised situation” and expressed remorse. The reigning 100-meter world champion followed up Tuesday morning with a written apology directed at Coleman, stating, “I love him & to him I can’t apologize enough.” She emphasized that her apology “should be just as loud” as her actions, adding, “To Christian I love you & I am so sorry.”

Richardson was arrested on July 27 at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport for a fourth-degree domestic violence offense, accused of assaulting Coleman. She spent over 18 hours in custody at the South Correctional Entity jail in Des Moines, Washington. The arrest occurred just days before she competed in the US championships in Eugene, Oregon.

In her video, Richardson spoke about engaging in self-reflection and said she refuses “to run away but face everything that comes to me head on.”

According to the police report, a Transportation Security Administration supervisor alerted officers to a disturbance involving Richardson and Coleman. Security footage showed Richardson grabbing Coleman’s backpack and pulling it away, then blocking his path as he tried to move past her. Coleman was reportedly pushed into a wall. The report also states Richardson appeared to throw an object, possibly headphones, at Coleman.

The police noted Coleman declined to participate further in the investigation and did not identify as a victim. Attempts to reach Coleman for comment were unsuccessful.
Richardson expressed gratitude toward Coleman on social media, saying he brought her “a greater understanding of unconditional love” despite her past experiences.

Richardson is a prominent figure in track and field, having won the 100 meters at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, earned silver at the Paris Games last summer, and helped secure Olympic gold in the 4×100 relay.

However, she missed competing at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 after testing positive for marijuana at the US Olympic trials.
