Senegal Defy The Odds, Defeat Hosts Morocco 1-0 To Become African Champions

A dramatic AFCON final ended with Papa Gueye’s extra time stunner crowning Senegal African champions over hosts Morocco.

Senegal defeated host Morocco nation 1–0 in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on Sunday to win the continental championship.

The only goal came in extra time from Pape Alassane Gueye, securing Senegal’s second AFCON title after a tightly contested and emotionally charged match that remained goalless in regulation time.

The encounter was marked by controversy when Senegal’s players briefly walked off the pitch in protest after a late, contentious penalty was awarded to Morocco, before play resumed and the penalty was missed when tournament highest gial scorer and Real Madrid attacker Brahim Diaz opted for a Panenka that was saved by Edouard Mendy.

Senegal’s victory confirmed their status as one of Africa’s elite teams and ended Morocco’s bid to win an AFCON title on home soil for the first time since 1976.
