Sanwo-Olu Hails Lagos Street Art Festival As Murals Transform Ozumba Mbadiwe

Governor Sanwo-Olu says street art strengthens Lagos’ identity, turning everyday public spaces into platforms for cultural expression.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has hailed the Lagos Street Art Festival, describing it as a powerful tool for reclaiming public spaces and amplifying creative expression across the state.

The governor made this known on Sunday via a post on X, where he highlighted how murals and street artworks across Lagos are helping to tell the city’s stories, celebrate its identity, and reflect the energy of its people.

According to Sanwo-Olu, the artworks form part of the Lagos Street Art Festival, an initiative that aligns with the state’s broader vision of promoting culture, creativity and inclusive access to the arts within everyday urban spaces.

The Lagos Street Art Festival presents the city as a living, open-air museum, where walls become storytelling surfaces and streets transform into public galleries, reinforcing Lagos’ reputation as a major hub of African creativity.

Founded by artists Osa Okunkpolor, popularly known as Osa Seven, and Akinlabi “Phisha” Akinbulumo, the Lagos Street Art Festival has grown into the city’s first fully structured street art platform, supported by government agencies and international partners.

Beyond visual appeal, the initiative highlights the growing influence of African street art as a cultural voice and an economic force, while also shaping conversations around identity, history and urban development in modern African cities.

The festival’s 2025 theme, “Legendary Lagos: City of Dreams,” showcases works by both Nigerian and international artists whose murals reflect the city’s resilience, diversity and relentless pace of life.

Sanwo-Olu noted that initiatives such as the Lagos Street Art Festival demonstrate how creativity can be embedded into public life, ensuring that art remains accessible and relevant to the people it represents.
