Rwanda Recalls Kenyan Drugs in Stores Over Safety Concerns

Four bulk batches of pink Fluconazole 200mg tablets imported into the country reportedly had a white discoloration after a short shelf life.

The Rwanda Food Drugs Authority (RFDA) on Wednesday, has announced that it was recalling a medication, Fluconazole 200mg tablets, manufactured and imported from Kikuyu, Kenya.

This is following an earlier notification from the agency, which had alerted the Kenyan manufacturer of discolouration in the tablets.

According to RFDA, four bulk batches of pink Fluconazole 200mg tablets imported into the country had a white discoloration after a short shelf life.

A statement by the agency read “Rwanda FDA instructs all importers, central medical stores, wholesalers, RMS branches, retailers, Public and Private Health Facilities to stop the distribution of the above-mentioned batches of fluconazole 200mg tablets and return them to their suppliers for proper management.”

It also ordered all retailers and health facilities to stop the distribution of the medicine and return them to the suppliers.

The agency said they will investigate to ascertain the adverse effects the drug has had on Rwandans.

Furthermore, final stocks on hand and quantities returned will be provided to the Health Ministry by the importers and providers.

At the time of publication, the Kenyan Health Ministry had not stated whether the drug would be recalled from Kenyan hospitals and chemists.
