Russia has accused the United States of destabilising global security through its proposed Golden Dome missile defence project, which aims to counter threats from China and Russia.
“The United States’ Golden Dome project undermines the foundations of strategic stability, as it involves the creation of a global missile defence system,” said Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on Tuesday.
The $175 billion initiative, championed by US President Donald Trump, seeks to develop a worldwide shield against missile attacks. According to Washington, the system is intended to neutralise growing missile threats from adversaries such as China and Russia.
However, Moscow argued that such a system risks triggering a new arms race and eroding the balance of deterrence that has helped maintain peace between major powers.
“By attempting to build an impenetrable shield, the United States is effectively discarding the principles of mutual deterrence,” Zakharova added. “This could provoke further escalation rather than enhance security.”
