A Russian missile strike has destroyed homes and critical civilian infrastructure in Ukraine’s southern city of Mykolaiv, local authorities confirmed on Sunday, injuring at least three people in the latest wave of attacks near the Black Sea front.
Ukraine’s State Emergency Service released images showing firefighters battling the aftermath of the strike in the port city, which has endured frequent shelling since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
The latest strike on Mykolaiv coincided with escalating hostilities across the region, as Ukrainian drones reportedly targeted several Russian cities over the weekend.
In Russia, a massive blaze erupted early Sunday at an oil depot near the Black Sea resort city of Sochi, prompting flight suspensions at the local airport in the Adler district. Krasnodar Region Governor Veniamin Kondratyev said debris from a Ukrainian drone had ignited the fuel tank. More than 120 firefighters were deployed to contain the fire.
The Sochi attack was one of several drone operations conducted by Ukraine, hitting targets in Ryazan, Penza, and Voronezh. Officials in Voronezh reported four people injured in one of the strikes.
These developments come amid renewed calls from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for stronger international sanctions against Russia. His appeal followed a deadly missile assault on Kyiv last Thursday that left at least 31 civilians dead, making it one of the deadliest attacks on the capital in recent months.
Ukrainian officials said the Kyiv assault involved more than 300 drones and eight cruise missiles, further highlighting the intensifying scale and complexity of Russian air raids on Ukrainian cities.
