A high-level conference held in Rome on Thursday to support Ukraine’s economic recovery secured over €10 billion (approximately $11.7 billion) in pledges, according to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
The event, attended by world leaders including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, comes amid renewed waves of drone and missile strikes on Kyiv by Russian forces.
Speaking at the opening of the conference, President Zelenskiy condemned the attacks on his country as “pure terrorism,” urging international partners to remain steadfast in their support.
Meloni praised the unified response of the international community, stating: “I think we should be proud of the result we have achieved together today—nations, international organisations, financial institutions, local authorities, the business sector, and civil society.” She announced that joint commitments made during the conference had surpassed €10 billion.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also announced €2.3 billion in agreements signed to boost Ukraine’s infrastructure and economic recovery.
“With 2.3 billion euros in agreements signed, we aim to unlock up to 10 billion euros in investments to rebuild homes, reopen hospitals, revive businesses, and secure energy,” von der Leyen said. “We are literally taking a stake in Ukraine’s future.”
This marks the fourth international conference aimed at rallying global support for Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022. Leaders at the summit cited the post-World War II recoveries of Germany and Italy as examples of resilience and rebuilding, underscoring hopes for a similar path for Ukraine.
