The Rivers State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the killing of a police inspector, Ibrahim Sani, who was allegedly shot by a colleague while on duty in Port Harcourt.
The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon at the Trans-Amadi axis of the state, where police officers were deployed on joint guard duty with military personnel at Next Cash and Carry Supermarket.
It was gathered that the suspect, Inspector Victor Okus, allegedly opened fire on two of his colleagues with his official rifle. Inspector Sani sustained fatal injuries, while another officer, Inspector Daniel Dauda, was seriously wounded and is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
Confirming the incident, the Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, said the officers involved were personnel of the 14 Police Mobile Force (PMF), Yola, Adamawa State, deployed to Rivers State on special duty.
“The Rivers State Police Command is deeply saddened to report a tragic and distressing incident that occurred on Sunday, January 18, 2026, resulting in the loss of a dedicated police officer, Inspector Ibrahim Sani,” Iringe-Koko said.
She disclosed that the suspect, Inspector Okus, who is attached to 17 PMF but on special duty at Intels, Onne, has been arrested and is currently in police custody.
According to preliminary investigations by the Unit Commander of 14 PMF, DSP Turaki Hassan, the shooting occurred at about 1:20 p.m. while the officers were on joint security duty. The injured officers were rushed to Nopsam Hospital, where Inspector Sani was confirmed dead.
Iringe-Koko added that Sani’s remains have been deposited at the Military Hospital Mortuary in Port Harcourt for autopsy.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the incident. He said the suspect would face an Orderly Room Trial and subsequent prosecution in court.
Adepoju cautioned officers on the careful handling of firearms, stressing that duty weapons must be managed responsibly to prevent avoidable tragedies. He also extended condolences to the family, colleagues and friends of the deceased officer.
