President Bola Tinubu has stepped in to grant a 14-day grace period to property owners in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) who were affected by the recent enforcement of ground rent arrears.
The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) had earlier commenced enforcement on 4,794 properties revoked for non-payment of ground rent spanning between 10 and 43 years.
The affected properties belong to government institutions, corporate organizations, and individuals, according to a press statement signed by Chijioke Nwankwoeze, Director of Land Administration, FCT.
Following the President’s intervention, defaulters now have two weeks to settle outstanding ground rents along with specified penalties depending on their property location. Those with properties in the Central Area must pay N5 million as penalty in addition to arrears, while penalties for Maitama, Asokoro, Wuse II, and Guzape districts stand at N3 million. Defaulters in Wuse I, Garki I, and Garki II will pay N2 million on top of their dues.
Additionally, property owners who have not registered their interests by obtaining the mandatory Minister’s Consent and registering Deeds of Assignment are given 14 days to complete these requirements at the FCT Department of Land Administration.
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barrister Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, CON, also announced a 14-day deadline for all property holders to pay their Right of Occupancy (R-of-O) or Certificate of Occupancy (C-of-O) bills or face revocation of their titles.
The Minister advised property owners to ensure timely payment of all property-related bills to enable the government to continue delivering development projects across the FCT.
