Pope Leo has voiced strong concern over the recent United States raid in Venezuela, urging that the welfare of the Venezuelan people must remain the top priority amid escalating tensions. Speaking during his traditional Sunday noon blessing at the Vatican, the pontiff called for an immediate end to violence and emphasised the need to respect Venezuela’s sovereignty.
“With a heart full of concern, I am following the developments of the situation in Venezuela,” Pope Leo said. He stressed that the unfolding crisis should lead to justice and peace rather than deepen instability, adding that the good of the Venezuelan people must prevail over all other considerations. The pope also underscored the importance of upholding the rule of law, constitutional order, and the protection of human and civil rights.
His remarks come against the backdrop of heightened international debate following the US military operation and the detention of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. The situation has raised concerns globally about civilian safety and the long-term implications for governance and stability in the country.
Pope Leo has previously spoken out on Venezuela, consistently advocating dialogue and diplomatic engagement over military intervention. In earlier statements, he urged the United States and other international actors to pursue peaceful solutions, including diplomatic negotiations and economic measures, as a means of fostering political change and lasting stability in Venezuela.
