Pope Leo is scheduled to hold a general audience with pilgrims at the Vatican on Wednesday for the first time since undergoing surgery for lung cancer, the Vatican has said.
The 71-year-old pontiff underwent an operation on October 13 to remove the lower lobe of his right lung, raising questions about how his health could affect his 17-month papacy.
In his first public appearance since the surgery on Sunday, Pope Leo pledged to gradually resume his usual activities as leader of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics.
The general audience is a regular feature of the Pope’s schedule, usually held on Wednesdays throughout most of the year.
The gathering takes place in St. Peter’s Square or indoors, depending on weather conditions.
